The Thrill of the Octagon: Pre-fight Rituals by MMA Favorites

It would be wrong to oversimplify pre-fight routines as mere showmanship. For the men and women of the octagon, these rituals also calm the nerves while psyching up the fighters for the brawl ahead. Still, it’s no doubt fun to watch our favorite mixed martial artists doing a fancy dance and cart wheeling on their way to the cage—where initial displays of fearlessness are soon tested in a long, icy stare down.

Many celebrated MMA fighters have grown a following not only because of their matchless strength and technique, but also because of their pre-fight habits. Some are loud and wild, while others are terrifyingly quiet. Here’s a short list of pre-fight rituals by octagon favorites that deserve special mention.

Clay Guida

Clay “The Carpenter” Guida may be known for his offensive style inside the octagon, but all that aggression is preceded by a rather painful ritual inflicted on him by his brother Jason: several brutal slaps to the face that’s sure to get any opponent thinking twice.

Diego Sanchez

No one pumps up the crowd better than “The Nightmare” Diego Sanchez chanting “YES!” as he marches to the octagon. The iconic chant has even crossed over to World Wrestling Entertainment through Sanchez fan and retired professional wrestler, Daniel Bryan.

Ronda Rousey

Femme fatale Ronda “Rowdy” Rousey takes a more subtle approach to pre-fight rituals by engaging in complete, restful silence in the locker room. Wearing her worn-out “battle boots” is also a must to keep the blood flowing to her toes before a match.

Junior dos Santos

The best form of intimidation doesn’t have to be dramatic as proven by Junior “Cigano” dos Santos whenever he throws a sharp finger down while glaring at the competition—a simple yet definite warning of unpleasant things to come.

Wanderlei Silva

Who knew a simple stretching exercise can look so terrifying? With fingers interlaced, “The Axe Murderer” Wanderlei Silva would roll his wrists with an intensity that matches his baleful glare.

Into the Fighter’s Mind

Behind every show of fierceness lies a strong determination to subdue one’s own weakness. American series Kingdom explores the mind and lives that animate the arena by delving into a world where professional MMA fighters struggle against dysfunctional relationships and inner demons.

In Season Two, ex-con Ryan Wheeler (Matt Lauria) continues to do double jumps before every match as he strives to rise above the mistakes of his past. Fellow Navy St. Gym Jay Kulina (Jonathan Tucker) takes the opposite gesture by rolling head-first into the cage as he bears the burden of his mother’s murky history.

As the two men in the episode “No Sharp Objects” match up in a decisive fight that leaves Ryan seeing a ray of hope despite his father’s death, and Jay still reeling from the tragic end of his girlfriend Ava, Kingdom reminds viewers that a fighter’s strength doesn’t only depend on the body, but also on the spirit.

Will Navy St. Gym’s two fighters finally find peace and overcome the ghosts of their past? Catch the premiere of Kingdom Season Three this June 2, Friday at 10PM, express from the U.S., first and exclusive on RTL CBS Extreme.

2017 TOP NOMINEE CHART FACTS:

  • In the past year, the chart-ruling Beyoncé notched her sixth No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 with Lemonade and earned eight top 40-charting songs from the set on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Lemonade also made the diva the first woman to debut at No. 1 with her first six full-length studio albums. In support of Lemonade, the entertainer mounted the Formation World Tour, which played to more than 2.2 million fans at 49 shows, and earned $256 million according to Billboard Boxscore. Beyoncé is a six-time Billboard Music Award winner, and was also was honored with the Billboard Millennium Award in 2011.
  • 15-time Billboard Music Award winner Justin Bieber continued an illustrious run of success since releasing his No. 1 Billboard 200 album Purpose, which generated his first three Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 singles: “What Do You Mean?,” “Sorry” and “Love Yourself.” He added two more top five Hot 100 hits in 2016, as his vocals helped Major Lazer’s “Cold Water” and DJ Snake’s “Let Me Love You” reach Nos. 2 and 4, respectively. The former also crowned Billboard‘s Pop Songs and Hot Dance/Electronic Songs charts, all while Purpose continued its domination: it has spent more than 70 weeks on the chart, Bieber’s longest run on the list since his since 2010 LP, My World 2.0.
  • EDM DJ duo The Chainsmokers surged to the mainstream with a string of smash singles over the past year. The pair notched their first top five Billboard Hot 100 hit in summer 2016, “Don’t Let Me Down,” featuring rising star Daya. After that, The Chainsmokers followed with their first No. 1, the 12-week leader “Closer,” featuring Halsey. The nostalgic song logged the longest reign atop the Hot 100 of 2016 and went on to historic heights, breaking the mark for the most weeks (27) tallied in the top five for any song in the Hot 100’s 59-year history.
  • Breakout rapper Desiigner’s viral hit “Panda” exploded in 2016, on its way to a record- setting 14 weeks at No. 1 on the Streaming Songs chart and 17 weeks atop Hot Rap Songs. It also clocked two weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. The song’s success helped the Brooklyn native earn several year-end honors, including the top new R&B/hip-hop artist of 2016.
  • Everything Drake touched turned to chart gold in the past year. The artist claimed his first No. 1 as a lead act on the Billboard Hot 100 with “One Dance,” featuring WizKid and Kyla; his Views album racked up 13 weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 (the longest run atop the list for a man since 1992); and his recent More Life project bowed atop the list in April. The latter set granted Drake his seventh consecutive No. 1 on the list, comprising every one of his full-length albums. Additionally, More Life blasted in atop the chart with a record number of streams for its songs in a single week: 384.8 million in the U.S.
  • Since soaring onto Billboard‘s country charts in 2012, Florida Georgia Line has continued to conquer with its mix of party anthems and reflective ballads. Dig Your Roots arrived as the duo’s third No. 1 on the Top Country Albums chart and the set spun off FGL’s fifth No. 1 single on Hot Country Songs, the 18-week leader “H.O.L.Y.” (as well as follow-up hits featuring Tim McGraw and Backstreet Boys). The act boasts two of three longest-reigning No. 1s in the Hot Country Songs chart’s six-decade history: before “H.O.L.Y.,” its debut hit “Cruise” ruled for a record 24 weeks.
  • 12-time Billboard Music Award winner Rihanna continued a record-setting run with her No. 1 Billboard 200 album Anti. As the set’s “Love on the Brain” reached No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100, she became only the third act in Hot 100 history to earn 30 top 10 hits, following The Beatles (34) and Madonna (38). Another Anti top 10, “Needed Me,” gave the global superstar her longest-charting Hot 100 hit: its 45 weeks surpassed the 41 of “We Found Love,” featuring Calvin Harris in 2011-2012.
  • Two-time Billboard Music Award-winners Twenty One Pilots spent the past year solidifying their domination of Billboard’s rock charts, claiming three long-running No. 1s on the Hot Rock Songs chart. The alternative rock duo’s “Stressed Out” ruled for 23 weeks, “Ride” followed with nine weeks on top, and “Heathens” spent a record 30 weeks at No. 1. All three tracks reached the top five on the all-genre Billboard Hot 100 chart — making Twenty One Pilots the first rock act to earn three top five hits in a year since 1988.
  • After The Weeknd broke through to the pop mainstream in 2015 with his No. 1 Billboard 200 album Beauty Behind the Madness, the eight-time Billboard Music Award winner returned with another chart-topper, Starboy, in 2016. The set ruled the list for five weeks and spun off a No. 1 Billboard Hot 100 in its title track, featuring Daft Punk. The album saw its second single, “I Feel It Coming,” again featuring Daft Punk, reach the top five in early April. Further, The Weeknd charted all 18 songs from Starboy on the Billboard Hot 100 dated Dec. 17, 2016, making him one of only two artists to have charted that many Hot 100 titles from a single album.

How do marriages die?

A step-by-step look at the way relationships crumble

To open his epic novel that explored infidelity, Leo Tolstoy wrote, “Happy families are all alike; every unhappy family is unhappy in its own way.”

The opening words of Anna Karenina may have gone down in history as one of literature’s most unforgettable lines, but a closer look at crumbling marriages and romantic relationships show that the roots of their breakdown have more similarities than most people realize.

Doomed relationships are often attributed to different causes, such as lack of intimacy, unresolved differences, or financial issues. In each case, an analysis by American professor Mark Knapp identifies five stages that reveal how relationships deteriorate following a common pattern.

Alienation

One television show that poignantly depicts how marriages break down is The Affair, a drama series that explores marital infidelity.

During the show’s first season, lead characters Noah Holloway (Dominic West) and Alison Lockhart (Ruth Wilson) saw themselves caught in the throes of their separate marital problems before being consumed by their forbidden love for one another.

Noah is a writer who’s trying to break free from the influence of his wealthy in-laws. Meanwhile, Alison is a waitress who’s struggling to piece her marriage back together in the wake of her son’s death. As the series progressed, Noah found himself more distant and less attracted to his wife, while Alison saw herself making a futile attempt to patch things up with her husband.

Pressures in both marriages lead to the first stage of a relationship breakdown, which Knapp calls “differentiating.” At this point, husband and wife pursue separate activities with little regard for each other.

In Noah’s case, his wife’s lack of involvement in the development of his second novel was a telltale sign of this stage. The same was true for Alison when she started feeling reluctant about living with her husband.

Tensions in both marriages eventually escalate to the next stage called “circumscribing.” Here, more communication boundaries emerge with the couple starting to claim individual personal spaces. This is evident in Noah’s situation where he spends more time working on his novel at the expense of his time with his wife.

The relationship then dwindles further to the third stage called “stagnation,” where couples only choose to stay together because of factors such as children—a tough decision for Noah. The marriage remains intact, but improvements are less likely to happen.

Broken ties

The Affair’s second season opened with Noah’s divorce, which has turned ugly, and Alison finally deciding to put the marriage behind her after failed attempts to rekindle her relationship.

Like all failing couples, Noah and Alison go through the last stages of a relationship’s decline beginning with “avoidance,” where all physical contact and communication are cut. Soon they enter the stage of “termination” by deciding to live separately for good.

Both marriages may have come to a close, but in some ways, endings are new beginnings. For Noah, the divorce gives him a chance to reconnect with his former wife and discuss their daughter’s future. Alison also becomes a mother once again after her life with her ex-husband.

Noah and Alison have earned the freedom to start a life together. But will their passion grow stronger for one another, or end up the way their marriages did?

The Affair Season Three premieres November 22 9:55PM, first and exclusive on RTL CBS Entertainment.
