LG reignites an old rivalry with Asian Basketball Showdown II

Korea’s LG Sakers and Barangay Ginebra gear up for a battle of the ages

LG Sakers versus Ginebra San Miguel

CBasketball season is in full swing! Five years after their last meeting, worlds collide yet again as two of the most popular basketball teams in Asia face each other once more. The LG Sakers, one of the stalwarts of the Korean Basketball League (KBL), is set to face what is arguably the country’s most beloved PBA team – the Barangay Ginebra San Miguel.

Dubbed as Asian Basketball Showdown, the first exhibition game between the two teams happened 5 years ago and was received very well by the appreciative crowd. It was a landmark event that pitted perennial crowd favorites in their respective leagues. The LG Sakers is one of the most well-supported teams in the whole of South Korea while Barangay Ginebra is a pillar in Philippine sporting history. To have these two teams face against each other is a dream come true for every fan of basketball.

While the LG Sakers bested Barangay Ginebra in their first foray five years ago, the Filipino squad is determined to pull out all the stops to ensure an enjoyable game for the crowd and hopefully, get a win in home court.

A big fan of basketball himself, LG Electronics Philippines Managing Director Inkwun Heo says “In the spirit of celebration of the 70th anniversary of South Korean and Philippine diplomatic relations, we want to treat Filipinos to an experience they’ll never forget. ”

Just like the first showdown, the exhibition game is still a free event courtesy of LG Philippines. To find out how to get a free ticket, click this Asian Basketball Showdown 2 for the full mechanics.

Asian Basketball Showdown II happens on September 17th, 6PM at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

The Thrill of the Octagon: Pre-fight Rituals by MMA Favorites

It would be wrong to oversimplify pre-fight routines as mere showmanship. For the men and women of the octagon, these rituals also calm the nerves while psyching up the fighters for the brawl ahead. Still, it’s no doubt fun to watch our favorite mixed martial artists doing a fancy dance and cart wheeling on their way to the cage—where initial displays of fearlessness are soon tested in a long, icy stare down.

Many celebrated MMA fighters have grown a following not only because of their matchless strength and technique, but also because of their pre-fight habits. Some are loud and wild, while others are terrifyingly quiet. Here’s a short list of pre-fight rituals by octagon favorites that deserve special mention.

Clay Guida

Clay “The Carpenter” Guida may be known for his offensive style inside the octagon, but all that aggression is preceded by a rather painful ritual inflicted on him by his brother Jason: several brutal slaps to the face that’s sure to get any opponent thinking twice.

Diego Sanchez

No one pumps up the crowd better than “The Nightmare” Diego Sanchez chanting “YES!” as he marches to the octagon. The iconic chant has even crossed over to World Wrestling Entertainment through Sanchez fan and retired professional wrestler, Daniel Bryan.

Ronda Rousey

Femme fatale Ronda “Rowdy” Rousey takes a more subtle approach to pre-fight rituals by engaging in complete, restful silence in the locker room. Wearing her worn-out “battle boots” is also a must to keep the blood flowing to her toes before a match.

Junior dos Santos

The best form of intimidation doesn’t have to be dramatic as proven by Junior “Cigano” dos Santos whenever he throws a sharp finger down while glaring at the competition—a simple yet definite warning of unpleasant things to come.

Wanderlei Silva

Who knew a simple stretching exercise can look so terrifying? With fingers interlaced, “The Axe Murderer” Wanderlei Silva would roll his wrists with an intensity that matches his baleful glare.

Into the Fighter’s Mind

Behind every show of fierceness lies a strong determination to subdue one’s own weakness. American series Kingdom explores the mind and lives that animate the arena by delving into a world where professional MMA fighters struggle against dysfunctional relationships and inner demons.

In Season Two, ex-con Ryan Wheeler (Matt Lauria) continues to do double jumps before every match as he strives to rise above the mistakes of his past. Fellow Navy St. Gym Jay Kulina (Jonathan Tucker) takes the opposite gesture by rolling head-first into the cage as he bears the burden of his mother’s murky history.

As the two men in the episode “No Sharp Objects” match up in a decisive fight that leaves Ryan seeing a ray of hope despite his father’s death, and Jay still reeling from the tragic end of his girlfriend Ava, Kingdom reminds viewers that a fighter’s strength doesn’t only depend on the body, but also on the spirit.

Will Navy St. Gym’s two fighters finally find peace and overcome the ghosts of their past? Catch the premiere of Kingdom Season Three this June 2, Friday at 10PM, express from the U.S., first and exclusive on RTL CBS Extreme.

Over 10,000 Runners Rock The Block At The Music Run™ By Philam Vitality In Manila

An infectious and energetic blend of music filled the atmosphere at McKinley West as over 10,000 participants, a.k.a. Music Runners™ ran, danced and partied at the second edition of The Music Run™ by Philam Vitality. The event, hailed in other countries as the Ultimate 5k Running and Music Festival, returned to Manila bigger and bolder following a smash-hit debut at the Philippine Arena last year.

A phenomenal and futuristic run, The Music Run™ is an award-winning event that offers a unique total music immersion experience and has been making waves all over the world, including multiple sold-out events in Asia this year, and new tour dates announced in India, Europe and South Africa for next year.

The Music Run™ by Philam Vitality started on a high note at the Music Village with a pre-party featuring local alternative soul band Sud, who rocked the crowd with upbeat renditions of their hits ‘How We Play’ and ‘Sila’. Pre-race energy levels were further pumped up with a mass warm up by Gold’s Gym, the much-loved music and dance infused workout.

Music Runners™ ran, danced and partied across a 5km route comprising of five 1km Music Zones – Rock, Pop, Old School, Hip Hop and Dance. Lined with over 120 concert-quality speakers pumping 150,000 watts of music the entire way, The Music Run™ by Philam Vitality is the world’s loudest 5k fun run. The soundtrack for run was voted for by the participants through a bespoke online music app developed in partnership with Spotify®.

In each of the Music Zones, Music Runners™ were treated to special interactive activities: From cool, cold pyrotechnics in the Philam Asset Management Inc Rock Zone; a tunnel with hanging balls at the BPI-Philam Pop Zone; a stage featuring AirAsia crew lip syncing to the top-voted songs with an electric “Superbowl” performance in the AirAsia Old School Zone with a chance to win exclusive flights and prizes; photo opportunities with graffiti artists, dancers and photo walls in the Hip Hop Zone; to a mobile disco tunnel with glowing lights in the Philam Vitality Dance Zone.

Presenting Sponsor Philam Life, who recently launched the Philam Vitality Active App, hosted a series of engaging running, swimming, and cycling challenges at their booth. A few lucky Music Runners™ who downloaded the app also walked away with cool prizes such as fitness devices and gym memberships.

“Through The Music Run™, Philam Life offers Filipinos a chance to stay fit while having fun. Last year was a really big success and we were inspired to bring it closer to more runners this year,” said Philam Vitality Deputy Head Kats Cajucom.

“This was made possible with the Philam Vitality program, a first of its kind, full-scale wellness program where members get rewarded for making healthy choices. Through Philam Vitality, we are taking active steps to positively transform the lives of Filipinos by helping them to live longer, healthier and better lives,” she added.

Music Runners™ were also treated to endless music and fitness-inspired entertainment in the Music Village courtesy of event sponsors.

Petron hosted five fun and challenging activity stations, which included a 10ft high rock-climbing station, a nine feet high ‘Bungee Fun’ jump, a VJ Booth, a ‘Blaze 100’ Velcro jump wall’ and also PS4 Dance games for participants for all Music Runners™ to enjoy.

At the Alcatel booth’s basketball challenge station, an Alcatel Pixi First phone was given away to the best scorer every hour. Alcatel Shine Lite smartphones featuring remarkable camera qualities were also won by Music Runners™ who dressed up in the theme “Dare to Shine,” as well as a Music Runner™ who struck the Best Pose at their photo booth.

Other sponsors such as Oakley and Saucony also showcased their latest products at their respective booths and provided Music Runners™ a chance to win exclusive prizes.

To cap off the event was the ultimate music festival that kept the energy high with dancers, laser lights, chill out zones, and fireworks. Australian radio house DJ Sam Withers, who was a big hit in last year’s after-run concert, wowed audiences once more with a stunning performance.

“The Music Run™ is not just another fun run. It aims to bring our running experiences to new heights of excitement. The Music Run™ first made waves in Asia and now it is sending waves of good vibes in cities around the globe,” said Martin Capstick, Chief Executive Officer and Co-Founder of Exceed Sports and Entertainment, event promoter of The Music Run™ in multiple cities in Asia.

“We are really glad to experience the Filipino energy once again. We hope that even after this run, more Filipinos would become inspired to take up healthier ways to have fun,” he added.

The Music Run™ Manila is presented by Philam Vitality, and sponsored by BPI-Philam, Philam Asset Management Inc., AirAsia, Oakley, Alcatel, Petron, Saucony, McKinley West, Mellow Radio, Manila Water and Takbo.ph.

The Dew Tour rides in Manila

Amateur Filipino skateboarders will have an adrenaline-charged showdown at Circuit Makati and try to win a trip to the Dew Tour USA, one of the biggest and most-awaited events for skaters around the world.

The face-off at Circuit Makati, called the Dew Tour Am Series, brings the winners of three grassroots events called bootcamps that took place in Laguna, Cebu, and Davao. Though the Dew Tour Am Series is happening for the second time in the Philippines, this year marks the first time that Mountain Dew® hosted the bootcamps for skaters outside Metro Manila.

“We had a great time when we held the Dew Tour Am Series for the first time in the Philippines last year but we wanted more skateboarders to display their talent and tricks. That’s why we held the bootcamps ahead of the Dew Tour AM Series,” said PepsiCo Flavors Category Manager.

“Skateboarding earned a unique energy and color over the years and Mountain Dew is proud that it has become a part of the growing momentum through the Dew Tour Am Series,” she added.

Aside from the skateboarders’ competition, Mountain Dew pro skateboarders Theotis Beasley, Chris Colbourn and Reemo Pearson will make a demo of their best tricks and moves at the Dew Tour Am Series. The skating legends will also show their support for the local skateboarding community.

“The Philippine skate scene has overwhelming energy and I am really glad that I was able to witness an extraordinary display of talent. I hope skaters here will sustain the skating passion which is growing around the world” Mr. Beasley said.

The winner of the Dew Tour Am Series will also win P75,000 in cash. The second and third place winners will also receive cash prizes.
